i think mirrors are great at making rooms look bigger and brighter, so why not even if you cant see yourself in it! they can reflect other things rather than people.
I think it depends on what they are reflecting. If it's a really high mantel and reflects the ceiling I think it looks terrible. I mean, its not like ceilings are pretty! However, I have seen mantels with mirrors, but with a big giant plate in front of them, so it kinda looks like the mirror is framing it and adding dimension... anyhoo, I guess that's my 2 cents for now:-) have an awesome day girl!
I had my big black mirror hung above our fireplace and eventhough I couldn't see my whole self but the top of my head it did reflect my pictures hung on the opposite wall as well as the different height's of the plants in front. It looked good :) I agree with lauryn...if it doesn't reflect anything but boring ceiling then for sure put something in front to give it more depth and purpose.
